Negotiating Distance & ‘Is there a way out of here?’

“It tells the story of how we always project images and roles onto one another: a puppet, a lover, merely a thing…”

Negotiating Distance is the final publication of Between Being and Imagining, a four-year research project, led by Bauke Lievens and funded by KASK School of Arts in Ghent, which investigated the concept of ‘artistic research’ in the circus field and included the creation of two performances – ANECKXANDER and Raphaël.

I followed the research project as it developed, documenting a series of ‘encounters’ (seminars experimenting with structured forms of conversation), and working on a short book, Is there a way out of here?, collecting interviews that I conducted with the artists Bauke Lievens, Alexander Vantournhout, and Raphael Billet.
