“There has been a surge in the quantity and quality of companies, an increase in programming opportunities and a significant increased interest in circus-based performance from audiences across the country. But, in comparison to other art-forms, the sector infrastructure remains limited and there is a need for more high-level advocacy for it to thrive…”
Initiated by Crying Out Loud and led by Daisy Drury, Circus Snapshot was a research project investigating the conditions and future prospects of the UK circus sector. Alongside a series of interviews, collective conversations were organised in Bristol, London, Salford and Derby.
I produced three case studies to support the research and anchor some of its key findings. The projects covered were Bedtime Stories by Upswing, an ambitious family show by a National Portfolio Organisation; The Hogwallops by Lost in Translation Circus, an ensemble performance developed by a mid-scale company; and Knot by Nikki & JD, a breakout piece by a young hand to hand duo.
